Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), Müllerian inhibiting factor

AMH is a member of the transforming growth factor-ß family, as is inhibin.

Immunohistochemical expression

• Granulosa cells

• Sertoli cells

• Granulosa cell tumours, both juvenile and adult types. Staining is patchy.

• Sertoli cell tumours of testis show only a few positive cells.

• Gonadoblastomas: the sex cord cells are immunoreactive.

• Other gonadal and extragonadal tumours studied were negative.

Diagnostic utility

• Identification of granulosa cell and Sertoli cell tumours. The limited numbers of cells showing immunoreactivity necessitates a careful examination of the tumour. AMH may be more specific than inhibin.
