TFE3

TFE3 is one of four members of the basic/helix-loop-helix/leucine zipper transcription factor subfamily MiT, the others being TFEB, TFEC and MITF.  

Immunohistochemical expression

Immunohistochemical positivity is seen in tumours with gene fusions involving the TFE3 transcription factor.

• alveolar soft part sarcomas
• some renal Xp11-translocation carcinomas
• PEComas which are MITF-negative

Diagnostic utility

• Diagnosis of PEComa, particularly when negative for HMB45
