Calponin

Calponin is a smooth muscle-specific protein which binds strongly to actin in a calcium-independent manner.

Immunohistochemical expression

• parenchymal and vascular smooth muscle

• myofibroblasts of desmoplastic stroma

• smooth muscle tumours

• angiomatoid malignant fibrous histiocytoma2

• myoepithelial cells of salivary gland tumours

• myoepithelioma and myoepithelial carcinoma of soft tissue3

• Neurothekeoma (nerve sheath myxoma)

• glomus tumours

• myofibrosarcoma of bone

• synovial sarcoma may be focally positive
