This is one of the major types of intermediate filament. It has a molecular weight of 51 kD.
It is expressed by:
normal, reactive and neoplastic astrocytes
developing, reactive and neoplastic ependymal cells
developing and neoplastic oligodendrocytes
retinal Müller cells
Schwann cells and peripheral nerve sheath tumours
Kupffer cells
some chondrocytes and some chondroid tumours
mixed tumours of the salivary glands and sweat glands
