Ca15.3

Ca15.3 corresponds to the MUC1 gene product, similar to epithelial membrane antigen. The monoclonal antibody is available commercially under the designation CA 15-3 MoAb and stains formalin-fixed tissue after antigen retrieval.

Immunohistochemical expression

• many normal epithelia¹

• the majority of carcinoma¹

• synovial sarcoma¹

• some normal haemopoietic tissues¹

• some haematolymphoid tumours¹

• follicular dendritic reticulum cells¹

• plasma cells and plasmablasts in myeloma¹

• immature erythroblastic cells in myelodysplasia¹

• T cell rich B cell lymphomas¹

• anaplastic large cell lymphomas¹

• L&H cells in nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin's disease (7/8 cases¹)

• there is weak staining of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells in classical Hodgkin's disease¹

Diagnostic utility

Serum CA15.3 is more sensitive than CEA in the detection of recurrent breast carcinoma².
