Adenocarcinomas of the ampulla of Vater can be subdivided into intestinal type, pancreaticobiliary type and unusual type; the latter includes solid, undifferentiated signet ring cell tumours. Intestinal type consists of well formed tubules and cribriform areas, as seen in colorectal carcinoma. Pancreaticobiliary type consists of simple or branching glands and small nests within a desmoplastic stroma.
The Immunohistochemistry correlates with the morphological subtypes.
